Brian Cern for
School Board

Hi, I'm Brian Cern,

and I'm running for the school board.

Over five years of supporting our schools, I have seen how a thoughtful, well-balanced approach can help our kids. I aim to continue working to raise the bar, so our kids are ready to face the challenges of an ever-changing world.

About

Brian and his wife Michelle chose

White Bear Lake to be their home.

Brian's fully vested in the success of our schools. It's what makes him the right person for the job. He has skin in the game.

Brian has a long history of working for our schools. Not only serving on the Hugo/Oneka PTA but also co-founding and serving as a two-term President for the North Star Elementary PTA.

This "inside look" has given Brian a keen insight into the needs of teachers, and a deep appreciation for the work that they do.  As Brian says, "If you want to know what the kids need, ask their teacher."

Oh, did we mention that Brian is endorsed by our teachers? Yep, on August 23rd, White Bear Lake Area Educators, Local #7286, endorsed Brian!

He believes that a STEM-based education, when paired with a solid backbone of the humanities, is the key we must give our children so that they can open every door that they may face.

Every student deserves the opportunity to shine.

While serving his school on the PTA, Brian learned a horrific stat: 30% of families in the school qualified for free or reduced lunch. And another 10% or so were on the bubble.  While legislation may have eliminated these stats, the simple fact is that many of the families within our district have some financial insecurity. As we all know, this situation often creates a barrier to academic success.

Let's get this straight... No student should be hindered by the circumstances they were born in. Every student deserves a warm, supportive place in which they can learn and grow.

Every student.

Brian Cern

The Cerns are in the process of having some restoration work done to our house.  A few pieces of equipment have failed, and we are looking at a particularly nasty bit of water damage.

Did you know that the demand for skill trades is expected to skyrocket in the next few years? Brian will work to continue to develop and strengthen WBL's Career Pathways programs so students may be better prepared for the world they will inherit.

We have seen, time and time again, how successful a student can be when they have the support of a talented and committed educator. We need to continue to build upon our traditions of creating a supportive environment where educators are valued, respected, and empowered to share their ideas collaboratively. I'll listen to our staff and teachers (they are the experts, after all), and will advocate for funding their needs...

Because that is how our children will succeed.

Nothing is more important to a child's education than families. They will forever remain the cornerstone of all we do. We have to work to strengthen communication between schools and families and ensure transparency and trust.

I love to encourage community involvement in school activities and decision-making.  It is rewarding, adds a deep connection and the long-term benefits cannot be ignored!

As a parent, Brian works toward providing children with better opportunities and resources than what he had growing up. The best teachers, the most up-to-date technology... With an understanding and appreciation for the past, we will get our kids ready for the future.
